Evolution of Heavy Metal music
Heavy Metal music has evolved dramatically since its inception in the late 1960s. From the early days of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin to today’s modern metal scene, there have been many changes in style, instrumentation, production techniques and lyrical content. In the beginning stages of heavy metal music (known as “proto-metal”) bands like Black Sabbath were heavily influenced by blues rock but added a heavier sound with distorted guitars and darker lyrics that focused on topics such as death, destruction and occult themes. This gave rise to what is now known as “doom metal” – a subgenre characterized by slow tempos, minor keys & dark atmospheres – which was popularized by bands such as Pentagram & Witchfinder General in the 1970s & 1980s respectively.
