PROGRESSIVE METAL

This subgenre of heavy metal music has been known as "prog" metal or in other words progressive metal. Progressive metal is a small metal genre, but with bands becoming more mainstream so will the popularity of the music.

1960 & 1970 - The Start of Progressive Metal

Progressive metal has been traced back to the 1960's and 70's. One of the first bands to alternate their metal music with some other forms of genres was a band called High Tide. There was also King Crimson and Rush that started to mix some of these other elements into their music. There was three bands that could really push progressive metal to what it has become today. Dream Theater, Queensryche and Fates Warning, they all had a melodic metal sound with traditional rock built in. Most of these bands had some rock influences and jazz that gave them a push to become something great.

Just Open the Door

Progressive metal started to breakout in the community in the early 1990s. This was all because of Queensryche's Silent Lucidity, which became a huge hit in stores, on the radio and on MTV. Other progressive bands started to come out and became more mainstream after this explosion of popularity. Band like Pain of Salvation, Symphony X, Tool, Ayreon, Opeth and Threshold all started to come out and make a name for them. Each had their own distinct sounds and elements to keep progressive metal evolving.

Time Moves On

The future continue with the build of progressive metal. Conscience, Disillusion and Dark Suns started to become the new comers of progressive metal and were greatly influenced by the "fathers" of progressive metal. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Anathema, Green Carnation, Opeth, Tool and Pain of Salvation.

Jazz, Classical, Rock and Metal Needs some Progressive

Having some elements from metal, jazz, classical and rock will give you a starting point of progressive metal music. There are even more metal genres within this metal genre. The most popular bands in progressive metal are King's X and Opeth. These two bands could even be considered to be progressive death metal bands. Traditional progressive metal has more elements of when it was starting as a music genre. Bands like Devin Townsend, Shadown Gallery and Symphony X are known for this. Also watch for bands like Pestilence, Meshuggah and Between the Buried and Me which are considered to be jazz / fusion death metal.

What's Next for Progressive Metal?

With these new bands coming into progressive metal the structure and style of the music has evolved to more shred guitars and complex music. The music genre will continue to change and continue to be influenced by jazz, classical, thrash, metal and its own music. These song structure, complex riffs and using more traditional instruments will continue to push this metal genre further into the future.
